Terrifying Report on Road Safety in 2018





India accounts for 11 percent of traffic fatalities worldwide in 2018

Road traffic fatalities are the bane of the developing world. This region according to the World Health Organization, accounts for around 90 percent of traffic deaths worldwide.

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways released the annual report on Road accidents in India less than a week ago. The report indicates a daily average of 1, 280 road crashes and 415 deaths in India (a 32.4 percent fatality rate). A total of 151, 417 deaths per year 

India is considered the most unsafe country in the world (in traffic fatalities). 
Road traffic accidents are statistically the eighth largest cause of deaths in India.
- India accounts for 11 percent of traffic deaths worldwide.
- China is # 2 at 63,000 deaths. 
- The US (with a phenomenally large number of vehicles and road network (comes third.)

The causes of vehicular death as reported include: (Multiple causes are involved)

- Over speeding, 64%)
- Unlicensed driving: 13%
- Driving on the wrong side (5.8%)
- Drunk driving (2.8%)
- Mobile usage: (2.4%)

43, 634 deaths (28%)  were connected to not wearing a helmet
24, 435 fatalities (16.1) were not wearing seat belts.

Highways/ Roads:

- National Highways had 35.7 % of deaths but represent only 1.94 percent of roads
- State Highways had 26.8 percent of deaths but represent only 2.97 percent of roads.

Categories involved:

Two-Wheeler vehicles: 31.4 percent of deaths
Light Motor Vehicles (Cars/ Jeeps etc): 20.3 percent
Pedestrians: 15 percent
Cyclists: 2.4 percent

The Ministry of Road Transport hopes that recent legislation (enhancing penalties for road violations and also penalizing authorities and businesses for road anomalies and vehicular condition) will reduce future accidents and fatalities.
